Lawbama profs - fall update (updated 10/21/09)

All together, 46 law professors are working or will soon be working in the Obama administration. In addition, four profs have been named to advisory or oversight boards.

Here's the updated list:

ADELL AMOS (Oregon) has been appointed Deputy Solicitor for land and water resources at Department of the Interior.

SAM BAGENSTOS (Michigan) is Deputy Assistant AG in the Civil Rights Division at Justice.

JONATHAN BAKER (American) is Chief Economist at the FCC.

MICHAEL BARR (Michigan) is Assistant Secretary of Treasury for Financial Institutions.

DAVID BARRON (Harvard) is Principal Deputy Assistant AG at OLC.

NORMAN BAY (New Mexico) has been named to head the Office of Enforcement for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

ROSA BROOKS (Georgetown) is a senior adviser to the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy.

MARCILYNN BURKE (University of Houston Law Center) is deputy director of policy and programs for the Bureau of Land Management

BILL BURKE-WHITE (Penn) is joining the State Department’s Policy and Planning office.

ALTA CHARO (Wisconsin) is a senior adviser in the Office of the Commissioner at the FDA.

SARAH CLEVELAND (Columbia) is Counselor on International Law with the Office of the Legal Adviser of the U. S. State Department.

TINO CUELLAR (Stanford) is Special Assistant to the President for Justice and Regulatory Policy, in the White House Domestic Policy Council.

SUSAN CRAWFORD (Michigan) is Special Assistant to the President for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy.

NESTOR DAVIDSON (Colorado) is Principal Deputy General Counsel at HUD.

LARRY ECHOHAWK (BYU) is the new head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

CHAI FELDBLUM (Georgetown) has been nominated to become a commissioner on the EEOC.

JODY FREEMAN (Harvard) is a counselor in the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change.

SETH HARRIS (New York Law School) is Deputy Secretary of Labor.

LISA HEINZERLING (Georgetown) wins the prize for first promotion: initially a senior advisor to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, she has been named Associate Administrator for the Office of Policy, Economics and Innovation (OPEI).

HENRY T.C. HU  (Texas) will become the Director of a new unit of the SEC, the Division of Risk, Strategy, and  Financial Innovation.

DAWN JOHNSEN (Indiana University) is still awaiting confirmation as Assistant AG and head of the Office of Legal Counsel in DoJ.

ELENA KAGAN (Harvard) is Solicitor General. 

NEAL KATYAL (Georgetown) is Principal Deputy Solicitor General.

NEIL KINKOPF (Georgia State) is serving in the Office of Legal Policy at DoJ.

DOUGLAS KMIEC (Pepperdine) has been confirmed as Ambassador to Malta.

HAROLD KOH (Yale) was confirmed as Counselor (general counsel) to the Secretary of State.

DAVID KOPLOW (Georgetown) has become Special Counsel for Arms Control to the General Counsel of the Department of Defense.

MARTY LEDERMAN (Georgetown) is Deputy Assistant AG in OLC. 

DAVID MARTIN (Virginia) is Principal Deputy General Counsel at the Department of Homeland Security.

DAN MELTZER (Harvard) is a Deputy White House Counsel.

MAX MINZNER (Cardozo) is Special Counsel to the Director of the Office of Compliance at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

TREVOR MORRISON (Columbia) is Associate Counsel for National Security Affairs in the White House Counsel's office.

BETH NOVECK (New York Law School) is U.S. Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Open Government.

SPENCER OVERTON (GW) is Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Policy in DoJ.

DIANE ORENTLICHER (American) is Deputy in the Office of War Crimes at the State Department.

TOM PEREZ (Maryland) has been confirmed as Assistant AG in charge of the Civil Rights Division at Justice [updated 10/6/09].

CATHERINE POWELL (Fordham) is joining the Policy and Planning office at State.

ARTI RAI (Duke) is Administrator for External Affairs at the Patent and Trademark Office.

CHRIS SCHROEDER (Duke) is the Assistant AG in charge of the Office of Legal Policy at Justice.

HOWARD SHELANSKI (Georgetown) is Deputy Director for Antitrust at the Bureau of Economics at the FTC.

ANNE-MARIE SLAUGHTER (Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs at Princeton, and former Harvard Law) is  Director of Policy Planning at the State Department.

DAMON SMITH (Rutgers-Camden) is at HUD.

CASS SUNSTEIN (Harvard) was confirmed as the head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA).

PETER SWIRE (Ohio State) is Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy.

DAN TARULLO (Georgetown), the first law prof picked by the POTUS for a major job, is a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

DAVID VLADECK (Georgetown) is already getting great press as Director of the Consumer Protection Bureau at the FTC.

PHIL WEISER (Colorado) is Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division.

The advisory group nominees include two for the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation:

• Martha Minow, Dean, Harvard Law School
• Gloria Valencia-Weber, Professor, University of New Mexico Law School

And one - Marty Malin (Chicago-Kent) - appointed to the Federal Service Impasses Panel of the Federal Labor Relations Board.

Plus - Elizabeth Warren (Harvard) chairs the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

Professor Charo served as a member of the Obama-Biden Transition Project, where she was a member of the HHS review team, focusing her attention particularly on transition issues related to NIH, FDA, bioethics, stem cell policy, and women's reproductive health. She is on leave for the 2009-2010 academic year to serve as a senior advisor in the Office of the Commissioner at the US Food & Drug Administration.
